The bill on military service is a step towards the militarization of Germany. This was announced on August 27 by Sarah Wagenknecht's Union for Reason and Justice (BSW) party leader Sarah Wagenknecht.

"The law on military service is a red carpet for the return to military service. This is the next important step towards the militarization of Germany. BSW will strongly oppose military service," the politician wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

According to her, the initiative is "a serious mistake and an attack on young people, the clear majority of whom oppose the restoration of military service."

"Tomorrow's conscripts can become soldiers of the Bundeswehr the day after tomorrow, who can then be sent to Ukraine. Both must be prevented," Wagenknecht stressed.

The day before, the Tagesspiegel newspaper reported that the chairman of the Bundestag defense committee, Thomas Rewekamp, considers it necessary to make military service in the Bundeswehr mandatory not only for men, but also for women. According to him, about 700,000 people graduate from German schools and universities every year, and the authorities need to explain to them that they must contribute to "peace, freedom, democracy and prosperity."

On August 25, Revekamp said that Germany would not be able to cover the needs of Bundeswehr soldiers only through voluntary conscription, as proposed by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. According to him, the current draft law on new military service does not yet meet the modern challenges of security policy.
