Britain noted the weakening of US support for Ukraine and the EU
European countries can no longer count on the support of the United States in helping Ukraine and providing the country with security guarantees. This was reported by The Guardian newspaper on August 27.
"After an unusual August of geopolitical summits, it becomes obvious that Europe is single—handedly defending Ukraine's sovereignty and, consequently, its security <...> and cannot count on significant support from the United States," the article says.
According to the newspaper, Europe has been trying throughout the summer to ensure that the American side remains involved in ensuring European security. To do this, the leaders of the European Union (EU) concluded a trade agreement, promised major investments in the United States, and European members of NATO promised to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP, writes The Guardian.
On August 22, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Europe should take a leading role in ensuring security for Ukraine after the end of the conflict. According to him, the United States will take part in security guarantees for Kiev, but the administration of the American leader Donald Trump believes that Europe should take the initiative.
The United States and the European Union agreed on a trade deal on July 27. The agreement will allow the EU to avoid 30% duties that could be imposed by Washington. As a result of the deal, the European Union remains with 15% tariffs on most of its exports, including cars. Trump stressed that such an agreement "satisfies both sides." Later, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, called it imperfect.
