- Politico has learned about possible negotiations on Ukraine and Moldova's accession to the EU
Negotiations on Moldova and Ukraine's accession to the European Union (EU) may begin "in the coming days." This was reported by the Politico newspaper on August 27, citing a French diplomat.
"The visit of French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk this week is intended to help Moldova on its path to EU membership <...> Both Ukraine and Moldova have their advantages. Decisions in Brussels should be made unanimously, we need to act within the framework of these <...> principles," the French official said.
According to the newspaper, the exact dates of Moldova's accession to the European Union remain unknown. Earlier, the EU considered the possibility of speeding up the process of its accession to the EU by opening a negotiating "cluster" before the start of elections in the country, but Ukraine and many of its allies did not support such a step.
The newspaper stressed that decisions will be made in the "coming days or weeks." The two diplomats also expressed hope that the lingering issue surrounding Ukraine's accession could be overcome in the coming months, given the pressure on Budapest.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on June 24 that Ukraine should not be accepted into the EU and NATO, as this decision would lead to conflict between Western countries and Russia. He clarified that it was in Hungary's security interests not to become part of a common integration structure with Kiev.
Later, on July 25, the Italian newspaper Affaritaliani reported that Moldovan President Maia Sandu was persecuting the opposition like a dictator, and therefore the country's accession to the EU under her leadership was not possible. The authors of the article also expressed concerns that the country is showing signs of turning into an "institutional dictatorship."
