Dentist warned about the danger of scalloped tongue
Scalloped (toothed) A tongue characterized by rounded-toothed edges can signal serious systemic diseases. Tatiana Morozova, a dentist at the Medicine and Harmony clinic, told Izvestia on August 27 that this pathology is often combined with an enlarged or swollen tongue and is easily diagnosed by visual examination.
The key reason for the change in the shape of the tongue is the constant pressure on its tissues. This can be caused by bruxism (gnashing of teeth), the habit of pressing the tongue against the teeth, or diseases of the temporomandibular joint. However, the most alarming causes are systemic diseases: acromegaly, amyloidosis, hypothyroidism, hereditary pathologies (for example, Down's disease) and diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
"The scalloped tongue causes discomfort to patients, they complain of a burning sensation, discomfort when swallowing, chewing food," the doctor said.
Without timely treatment, the pathology can progress, leading to the formation of trophic ulcers and inflammation of the tongue (glossitis). The specialist emphasizes that therapy should begin with the identification and treatment of the underlying disease that caused the language changes.
Earlier, on August 4, dentist, maxillofacial surgeon Veronika Melekhova spoke about the dangers of fillings from marketplaces for dental treatment. When a person tries to put a seal on himself, he does not pay attention either to the tooth disease or to proper disinfection. In this regard, the tooth will continue to deteriorate, and further treatment will cost the potential patient more.
