Skin aging occurs in different ways for each person: someone is the first to notice dryness and fine wrinkles, others develop age spots or the elasticity of the oval face decreases. These differences are related not only to age, but also to lifestyle, genetics and hormonal changes, dermatocosmetologist Ekaterina Konstantinovskaya told Izvestia on August 27.

"Dermatologists distinguish several classic types of aging: pasty, fine-wrinkled, muscular and deformed. In fact, it is a reflection of the weak points of each individual. Knowing your type of aging helps you choose the right care and procedures to prolong your youth and keep your face toned," explained Dr. Konstantinovskaya.

According to the expert, with the pasty type, the tendency to edema appears faster, with the fine—wrinkled type - to dryness and pronounced wrinkles. The muscular type ages the slowest: the face remains in good shape for a long time, but with age it becomes sharper, creases appear. The deformity type is associated with impaired lymph drainage and weight gain — the skin sags, and the oval becomes less clear.

"The process is influenced not only by innate features. In addition to the classical scheme, other factors of skin aging can be identified — they show exactly which mechanisms trigger changes in each specific case," said Konstantinovskaya.

The expert identifies several types of skin aging. One of them is chronological, or natural aging. With age, the production of collagen and elastin decreases, which leads to loss of moisture, thinning and dryness of the skin. Fine wrinkles begin to appear on the face, which become more pronounced over time.

Photoaging, in turn, occurs under the influence of ultraviolet radiation. In people with a light skin phototype, it manifests itself especially quickly. The skin becomes rough and uneven, pigmented spots and deep wrinkles appear, especially in the area of the eyes and lips.

Hormonal aging is associated with changes in estrogen levels during menopause. It is manifested by dryness, thinning of the skin and accelerated loss of elasticity. In women over the age of 45, hormonal changes often become the main factor in skin aging.

"Lifestyle aging directly reflects a person's habits. An unhealthy lifestyle accelerates the appearance of wrinkles and gives the skin a gray tint. In smokers, wrinkles are deeper and narrower, and capillaries become more noticeable due to vasoconstriction. Lack of sleep and constant stress also accelerate oxidative processes, which causes the skin to lose its radiance," said Konstantinovskaya.

The doctor noted that a person can determine their type of aging on their own if they carefully monitor skin changes, but it is more reasonable to entrust this to a doctor. Pigmentation and uneven tone indicate photoaging. Severe dryness and loss of density after the age of 45 are often associated with hormonal changes. A grayish skin tone and wrinkles are a consequence of lifestyle.

"It is impossible to completely stop aging, but it is possible to slow down the process. Basic care should include cleansing with mild means and moisturizing. And contrary to popular belief, in the pursuit of maintaining supple skin, it is worth using SPF protection only if the UV index is 3 or higher," concluded Konstantinovskaya.

Earlier, on August 26, Natalia Mikhailova, PhD, dermatovenerologist, cosmetologist, creator of the MESALTERA by Dr. Mikhaylova brand of professional cosmeceuticals, named the main stages of skin care in the autumn period in an interview with Izvestia. According to her, most often in autumn the skin suffers from dryness, tightness, irritation, peeling, as well as from hyperpigmentation and inflammation — this is a consequence of summer hyperinsolation.
