The doctor dispelled the myth about the help of potassium-rich foods for depression
Eating foods high in potassium, such as bananas, is not a reliable way to prevent depression. This was stated by Irina Krashkina, a psychotherapist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg clinic), Candidate of Medical Sciences.
According to her, the role of potassium in the development of depressive disorders remains controversial and has not been confirmed by scientific evidence, so you should not trust such information.
"It's not worth counting on the fact that eating foods rich in potassium helps prevent the development of a depressive episode or depressive mood," she said.
The specialist stressed that in order to maintain mental health, it is more important to adhere to a balanced diet and regularly monitor the level of trace elements in the body. If a potassium deficiency is detected, it can be replenished with the help of special products or medications. However, they should not be considered as a means to prevent depression.
Krashkina noted that depression is a complex mental disorder, the etiology of which includes many factors. Therefore, for its prevention and treatment, an integrated approach is needed, including not only diet correction, but also work with a psychotherapist, and in some cases— drug therapy.
Expert Maria Molostvova spoke on July 21 about the impact of sleep quality on brain health. She noted that chronic sleep disorders can cause serious harm to brain function, including an increased risk of cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases.
