- Journalists held a solidarity rally in Gaza after the death of colleagues in an IDF strike
Journalists from various Arab media held a solidarity rally in Gaza City, where five members of the press were killed after an attack by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). This was reported to Izvestia on August 26 by Mahmoud Alawadia, a journalist from the Al Mayadeen TV channel.
"In Gaza City, the Union of Journalists held a solidarity rally condemning the Israeli crime of the targeted killing of fellow journalists on the territory of the Nasser medical complex," he said.
During the action, the need for international legal protection for members of the press in the Gaza Strip, who "record the crimes of the Israeli occupation with their cameras and lenses," was emphasized.
"We are talking about more than 245 journalists killed by Israel — many of them were killed while performing their professional duties," Alawadia said.
He called the new IDF strike a planned and public attack. At the same time, such deliberate attacks on media workers have become systematic on the part of the Israeli army, the reporter noted.
"In the middle of the day, the Israeli army killed staff members who were providing care at Nasser Hospital. The journalists gathered here condemned this crime. They demand international protection, call for accountability and for the exposure of Israeli war crimes on all international platforms," the correspondent stressed.
Israel carried out an airstrike on the emergency room of Nasser Hospital in the southern Gaza Strip on August 25. The IDF confirmed the attack. Initially, four media representatives were reported dead — Hussam al-Masri, a photojournalist for Reuters, Mohammed Salama, a photojournalist for Al Jazeera, Moaz Abu Taha, a journalist for the NBC network, and Mariam Obu Daka, a representative of The Independent Arabic and The Associated Press.
Later it became known about the death of the fifth journalist. The total number of victims reached 20 people. It was clarified that the Palestinian syndicate of Journalists called on the United Nations and the International Federation of Journalists to take practical and deterrent steps to stop the killings of media representatives in Gaza.
