- The Iranian Foreign Ministry promised to respond to Ukraine's decision to cancel visa-free travel.
Tehran will impose retaliatory measures against Kiev in response to Ukraine's rupture of the memorandum on visa-free travel for holders of diplomatic and official passports. This was announced on August 26 by the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic, Esmail Bagai.
"This is unjustified, and Ukraine has taken an anti—Iranian position," the Tasnim news agency quoted Bagai as saying.
He also noted that Ukraine's position violates international law, and Iran "will respond in kind."
The Memorandum on visa-free travel for citizens with diplomatic and official passports has been in force between Ukraine and Iran since 1993. It provided simplified entry and exit for official representatives of the countries: diplomats, consular staff and government services. On August 21, the government's representative in the Verkhovna Rada, Taras Melnichuk, announced the cancellation of the memorandum.
Earlier, on August 4, American leader Donald Trump signed a decree banning citizens from 12 countries, including Iran, Afghanistan, Yemen and Congo, from entering the United States. In addition, partial entry restrictions have been introduced for citizens of Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Togo, Venezuela, Turkmenistan and Sierra Leone.
