- The candidate for president of Bolivia promised to terminate contracts with Russia and China
Bolivian presidential candidate Jorge Quiroga said on Tuesday, August 26, that if he wins the election, he intends to terminate major contracts for the development of lithium resources with Russia and China.
"We do not recognize the contracts of (current President Luis Alberto. — Ed.) Arce <...> Let's stop them, they will not be approved," he said in an interview with Agence France—Presse (AFP).
According to the agency, Quiroga intends to carry out radical reforms of Bolivia's economic model, which include drastic cuts in government spending. It is specified that he reached the second round of the presidential elections in Bolivia, they will be held on October 19.
Freddy Gustavo Velasquez Robles, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Energy for Planning and Energy Development, told Izvestia on August 19 that the Bolivian Ministry of Energy expects to achieve approval of an agreement on the construction of a lithium carbonate plant jointly with the Russian Federation before the end of Arce's term.
In September 2024, a subsidiary of Rosatom State Corporation and the Bolivian state-owned enterprise YLB (Yacimientos de Litio Bolivianos) signed an agreement to build a plant in the Uyuni salt marsh. The project involves the production of 14 thousand tons of lithium carbonate per year. The agreement is awaiting approval in the upper and lower houses of parliament, after which construction of the plant can begin.
