Since the strengthening of border controls at the German borders in May 2025, more than 10,000 people have been refused and have been returned to their countries of origin. This was reported on August 26 by the Tagesspiegel newspaper, citing data from the country's Interior Ministry.

Among those denied entry were 550 people with asylum applications.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt called the refusals at the borders a "highly effective measure" and added that everything is being done "within the framework of German and European legislation."

At the same time, the politician did not specify how long the stricter border controls would be in effect.

In early summer, the Berlin Administrative Court ruled that refugees could not simply be denied entry if they applied for asylum in Germany after crossing the border.

On July 18, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz acknowledged the failure of the migration policy of former German Prime Minister Angela Merkel, which led to the migration crisis in both Germany and Europe.

Prior to that, on July 4, it was reported that Dobrindt was looking for allies in Europe to tighten the EU's migration policy and, in this regard, planned to convene a summit of the interior ministers of the union countries.
