In Russia, Military Doctor's Day is celebrated on August 28, highlighting achievements in military medicine. Sergey Polikarpov, an oncologist and professor of the Department of Faculty Surgery No. 2 at Sechenov University, told Izvestia about the current situation in this area.

"Even at the very beginning of my career, I knew that I would go there. But the injury disrupted my plans for a while, and it wasn't until 2023 that I started working at a military hospital of a private military company. I didn't have to negotiate with my conscience, so the decision was easy. I couldn't have done it otherwise. Classics of Russian medicine, everyone worked at the front and said that every surgeon should have a tunic with gold shoulder straps in the closet," the specialist said.

While working at the hospital, Polikarpov prepared for the specifics of combat injuries, actively studying intensive care and surgical interventions for combat injuries such as hemorrhagic shock. He paid special attention to the issue of evacuating the wounded from the battlefield.

"The wounded from the enemy fire zone with a depth of about 20 km are evacuated by special groups of trained fighters. The "Three Hundredth" is carried in their arms and wheeled on carts, sometimes they are carried on a buggy or bike. At the same time, you need to disguise yourself and protect yourself from blows from the sky. Sometimes this evacuation half marathon stretches for days and weeks," the doctor said.

In addition, Polikarpov shared his experience working in various hospitals. In 2023, he worked in Bakhmut, in 2024 - in the Lugansk People's Republic (LNR), as well as in a medical facility based on the Kursk Regional Hospital, where, according to him, ideal conditions for the work of doctors were created. In combat conditions, doctors sometimes work around the clock, providing medical care to the wounded and those affected by other diseases.

The oncologist surgeon added that modern military medicine is primarily a system aimed at providing prompt assistance and saving lives, which was made possible thanks to the coordinated work of doctors and management.

On August 15, military medics who are part of the Special Forces Medical Detachment (MOSN) The Kirov Military Medical Academy of the South Group of Forces told Izvestia about the progress of providing assistance to soldiers of the Russian Armed Forces in the special operation zone. According to the head of the neurosurgical group of the Military Medical Academy's Special forces medical unit with the call sign Neuron, his team has to deal with injuries of varying severity, ranging from traumatic brain injuries penetrating the brain to peripheral nerve injuries. Military personnel with traumatic brain injuries are most often transferred to neighboring hospitals.
