- The Russian Foreign Ministry called on Israel to prevent the deterioration of the situation in Gaza
Israel must take urgent measures to prevent the deterioration of the situation in the Gaza Strip, as well as restore humanitarian access and stop the fighting. This was announced on August 26 in a media appeal on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
"The Russian side calls on the Israeli authorities to take urgent measures to prevent its further degradation, stop the fire, restore unhindered humanitarian access, and ensure that all those in need receive the necessary humanitarian aid, including food," the statement said.
Thus, according to forecasts of the ministry, by the end of September this year, famine will spread to the provinces of Khan Yunis and Deir el-Balah. At the same time, the situation in the Palestinian enclave is also deteriorating, which could endanger the lives of 132 thousand children under the age of five.
The Foreign Ministry added that the Russian side expects to adopt an initiative to overcome the humanitarian crisis through the intervention of the UN Security Council.
On August 22, the United Nations declared a catastrophic famine in the Gaza Strip for the first time. This corresponds to the famine of the fifth phase according to the classification of phases of food security (IPC). The UN called the proposed definition of the situation plausible.
On August 21, the Ministry of Health of the Gaza Strip reported 271 deaths from starvation. It was clarified that 112 children were among the dead. The number of injured in hospitals exceeded 2 thousand people. Prior to that, on August 4, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk reported that Israel's refusal to provide Gazans with access to food could be qualified as a crime against humanity.
