Public transport should dominate in large cities, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin believes. He expressed this opinion in an interview with KP.RU, talking about the development of the capital's transport network.

"Millions of people live in a relatively small area. And if they have millions of cars, they just won't fit on the roads," Sobyanin said. The mayor of the capital recalled that in Moscow there are more than 400 cars per thousand inhabitants. According to this indicator, the capital is second only to the Moscow region, where there are 415 cars per thousand people.

The development of the road network helps to avoid a traffic collapse in Moscow, Sobyanin stressed. He noted that currently 70% of the capital's population uses public transport in Moscow every day. By 2030, the Moscow authorities intend to increase this figure to 75%.

"Our strategic goal is to keep the city moving, so that more than 3.5 million cars per day do not enter Moscow's roads even during peak loads," Sobyanin stressed.

The mayor of the capital expressed the opinion that in the future all transport, primarily rail, will be unmanned. He recalled that the launch of the first unmanned tram is scheduled for September, and testing of an unmanned metro train will begin at the end of the year.

The metro will remain a megaproject that the city will continue to implement in the coming years, the mayor emphasized. On average, about six stations will be built per year. Sobyanin also named the connection of the Solntsevo—Butovo highway with the Moscow High—Speed Diameter and the extension of the Moscow Central Diameters to the centers of neighboring regions - Yaroslavl, Tula, Ivanov, Tver, Smolensk - among the most important urban transport projects. "We try to do this with minimal capital costs, but we build logistics in such a way as to increase the frequency of movement, comfort of movement, and integrate into existing diameters," the mayor said.
