Rescuers stopped searching for climber Nagovitsina at Victory Peak
Rescuers in Kyrgyzstan have stopped searching for Russian climber Natalia Nagovitsina, who has been at Victory Peak at an altitude of about 7.2 thousand meters since August 12. Dmitry Grekov, head of the Yuzhny Inylchek base camp, told TASS on August 25.
"We have closed the works today. We wanted to fly there by eurocopter (helicopter. — Ed.), but there is no [suitable] weather," Grekov said.
According to him, the chances of survival of Nagovitsina in such high-altitude conditions are practically nonexistent. However, the camp commander noted that she could not be officially declared dead.
"We know where she lies. There's no way to get to her, the doctor didn't look at her," Grekov said.
He added that no further search attempts will be made until the spring of next year.
The fact that 47-year-old Nagovitsina was stuck at Victory Peak was reported on August 19 in the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kyrgyzstan. She broke her leg during the descent and has been at altitude for about two weeks. Vera Belikova, the administrator of the Karkyr base camp, said that Nagovitsina is a very strong and calm person. She has already had experience of climbing mountain peaks in the past, and many climbers know her.
On August 25, the head of the press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kyrgyzstan, Adil Chargynov, told Izvestia that new attempts to rescue Nagovitsyna could be initiated by relatives or mountaineering federations.
