In the UK, convicts are not going to be imprisoned for less than a year.
The UK authorities plan to stop incarcerating convicts for less than a year due to a shortage of places in correctional institutions. The Independent newspaper writes about this on August 24.
A bill to address prison overcrowding will be presented to the British Parliament in September. The Labor Party will abolish most short prison sentences and introduce a Texas-style system under which prisoners can receive early release for good behavior. Criminals, including those convicted of violent crimes, will be released after serving only a third of their sentence.
It is reported that the bill of the Minister of Justice of the Kingdom of Shabana Mahmoud will also cancel sentences of less than 12 months, except in cases where there are exceptional circumstances.
As a result, in most cases, offenders are going to be assigned community service, and the ministry also intends to ban convicted criminals from visiting pubs, music concerts and sporting events. In addition, violators may be given driving restrictions, travel bans, and the introduction of restricted areas.
Earlier, on August 1, The Times newspaper reported that the number of foreign prisoners in the UK is growing, their number has reached the highest level since 2013. In some London prisons, they make up about 85% of all convicts. A quarter of their foreign prisoners are Albanians, Poles and Romanians. Experts note that this growth is due to the record level of immigration since 2020.
