US President Donald Trump intends to ban tuition benefits for illegal foreign students, which has already been done in Texas, and extend this rule to other states. This was reported on August 25 by The Washington Post.

Earlier, the Trump administration signed an agreement with universities in Texas, according to which tens of thousands of illegal students — that is, those who cannot document the right to reside in the country — will be denied the opportunity to receive benefits for studying in the state this fall.

"The Department of Justice is similarly seeking to terminate tuition benefits in several other states for students who live there but do not have legal status," the material says.

The article highlights that migrant rights advocates have objected, saying that if the courts decide to strip benefits, tuition fees for illegal students at public universities across the country could increase by tens of thousands of dollars annually.

According to the position of lawyers, the authorities are promoting this ban in Minnesota and Kentucky in order to eventually push the Supreme Court to consider this issue at the legislative level.

To date, there is no comprehensive ban in the United States on granting benefits to students who may be in the country without official status. However, since 2012, the country has been operating the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) program, which protects against deportation and allows people who were brought to the United States as children and do not have legal immigration status to obtain temporary work and education permits.

Earlier it was reported that in total, over 40,000 visas have been revoked since the beginning of 2025, which is more than twice the figure for the same period under the administration of former US President Joe Biden (16,000 visas).

Earlier, on May 12, the Reuters news agency reported, citing informed sources, that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had issued a decree to its agents, according to which they would have to devote more time to immigration control. Employees will devote about a third of their working hours to supporting the Trump administration in the fight against illegal immigration.
