Thousands of criminals in the UK will be able to avoid imprisonment. Such a bill will be submitted to the British Parliament in September in order to address the problem of overcrowding in prisons. This was reported on August 25 by The Times newspaper.

"Tens of thousands of criminals, including sex offenders, shoplifters, drug traffickers, and violent thugs, will avoid prison altogether thanks to government reforms to sentencing legislation that will be presented to members of parliament next month," the publication says.

According to the newspaper, the bill will encourage judges not to impose prison sentences of less than 12 months in an attempt to counteract the crisis of prison overcrowding in the UK. It clarifies that offenders in most cases will be sent to perform community service. The exception will be cases where the judges will still determine their prison sentence.

In addition, the bill will also include a system according to which prisoners will be able to be released from prison early for good behavior.

The Times newspaper reported on August 1 that the number of foreign prisoners in the UK is growing, and their number has reached its highest level since 2013. It was clarified that every eighth prisoner there is a foreigner. Experts note that the increase in the number of prisoners is due to the record level of immigration since 2020.
