Fresh green peas and pea groats have high nutritional value. Irina Lyalina, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the State University of Education, spoke on August 25 about how these products differ and to whom they can be especially useful.

"Green peas are rich in vitamins and minerals, especially B vitamins, and are low in calories, helping with weight control. It contains vitamins A, C, E, K, and of the B vitamins, these are B1, B6, and B9. Green peas help to remove excess fluid and can be useful in some kidney diseases, i.e. it has a diuretic effect," the expert said.

Pea groats, in turn, are valued for their high content of vegetable protein and fiber. This product is able to partially replace meat and maintain the normal functioning of the digestive system. Lyalina emphasized that protein from peas plays an important role as a building material for the body, and fiber helps improve metabolism.

According to her, the choice between fresh peas and cereals depends on the nutritional goals. The former is better suited for replenishing vitamins and maintaining weight, while the latter is better for obtaining protein and fiber.

"Any pea can cause bloating and gas formation, and sometimes allergic reactions, so it should be consumed in moderation and properly combined with other foods," the specialist emphasized.

In addition, pea groats have a number of contraindications. Lyalina clarified that it should not be included in the diet for pancreatitis, peptic ulcer, kidney and genitourinary diseases. The increased purine content also makes the product undesirable for gout, as they contribute to the accumulation of uric acid.

Chemist Andrey Dorokhov warned on August 8 about the risk of bacterial disease due to watermelon. According to him, bacteria, including conditionally pathogenic strains of the intestinal group, actively multiply in a sweet environment. To avoid this, watermelon should be stored in an airtight glass or food container in the refrigerator. The shelf life should not exceed 72 hours.
