In summer, many people abuse the sun, as a result of which the skin is often damaged in autumn, with impaired barrier function and reduced immunity. Natalia Mikhailova, PhD, dermatovenerologist, cosmetologist, and creator of the MESALTERA by Dr. Mikhaylova brand of professional cosmeceuticals, told Izvestia on August 26 about how to properly care for the skin in the autumn period.

"With the onset of autumn, the skin begins to actively respond to changes in the environment. Cold weather, reduced humidity, wind and heating in the premises contribute to its dehydration, increased sensitivity and vulnerability to external stimuli," she said.

According to the expert, most often in autumn the skin suffers from dryness, tightness, irritation, peeling, as well as hyperpigmentation and inflammation — this is a consequence of summer hyperinsolation. One of the common mistakes in autumn care is avoiding moisturizers. Many people believe that hydration is important only in summer, although in autumn and winter the skin especially suffers from moisture loss due to temperature fluctuations and dry air in heated rooms.

It is necessary to moisturize the skin in such conditions twice a day, and in case of severe dryness, add masks, serums and special sprays. It is also important not to forget about the internal hydration of the body and drink more water. If there were enough light gel textures in the summer, then with the onset of autumn it is worth switching to more saturated creams containing nutritional components.

"In the morning, moisturize your skin, while not forgetting about sun protection. Despite the fact that the autumn sun seems harmless, ultraviolet light is still active. Therefore, be sure to apply a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. In the evening, use two products — first a serum or ampoules, then a nourishing cream," Mikhailova suggested.

To restore the skin after the summer period, the doctor recommended mild homemade peels — salicylic, almond, milk, pyruvic. Glycolic peels are better suited for age-related skin, as well as complex formulations that contain various acids.

According to the cosmetologist, autumn is the best time for professional peels and hardware procedures, as solar activity is reduced and the risk of pigmentation is minimal. Both surface peels (based on almond, lactic, lactobionic, salicylic acid) and deeper ones are performed, for example, retinoic peeling.

In addition, she pointed out that after a summer, a pleasant vacation and a busy vacation, many people experience stress, and this is one of the key factors provoking an exacerbation of skin diseases. In autumn, it is especially important to maintain a stable emotional background.

"Take a walk in the fresh air, observe the daily routine, do not forget about physical activity. All this reduces cortisol levels and strengthens the body's defenses, including the skin. Make sure that the diet contains a sufficient amount of vitamins and trace elements, especially vitamins D, A, E, C, group B, as well as magnesium, zinc, selenium and iron," the doctor noted.

In autumn, the natural synthesis of vitamin D is also reduced. When it is deficient, the skin becomes dull, inflammation may increase and recovery may deteriorate.

During the transition period, it is important to avoid sudden temperature changes, overheating, going from heat to cold and vice versa. This greatly weakens the skin, especially prone to inflammation, the cosmetologist emphasized. As for baths and saunas, they are acceptable in moderation, but with frequent and intense heat exposure, the skin may suffer from dehydration and thinning of the lipid layer. After visiting the steam rooms, it is necessary to apply regenerating and moisturizing products.

"After a shower, the skin loses a lot of moisture, especially if too hot water is used. Apply a moisturizer to wet skin immediately after cleansing — it helps to retain moisture and strengthen barrier functions," Mikhailova added.

In April, Mikhailova told Izvestia that mild cleansers should be used in the warmer months — foams, gels or mousses with added acids or enzymes.
