Emeralds, sapphires, rubies, and alexandrites remain among the most expensive gemstones, excluding diamonds. The cost is determined by a combination of mass, shade and shape, and also depends on the origin and popularity among jewelers. This was announced on August 25 by the Deputy Dean for Scientific Work of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the State University of Education, geographer Peter Krylov.

"Other significant factors affecting the value of precious stones are the cut, the origin from a particular country in the world, as well as the fashion factor. In recent years, changes in market demand for certain precious stones and jewelry in general have become increasingly important. An ornament from a famous jewelry brand will cost more than a similar product from a little—known craftsman," the expert said.

Krylov drew attention to the fact that the stones in the products of well-known brands are valued more expensive than similar jewelry by little-known craftsmen. Unique specimens can cost dozens of times more than typical ones, and historically significant minerals reach hundreds of thousands of dollars per carat. In some cases, the price of a single stone is estimated in millions of dollars.

According to the expert, such minerals are exhaustible non-renewable resources. A number of fields have already been closed, leading to higher prices. He recalled that the extraction of colored stones is a complex and energy—intensive process that requires high qualifications.

At the same time, according to Krylov, in the 21st century, the demand for precious stones is gradually decreasing. Among the main reasons, he highlighted the popularity of synthetic diamonds, changing consumer preferences and economic difficulties in countries that are traditionally the largest buyers.

On August 21, Elena Levitskaya-Erish, Director of SOKOLOV ATELIER, told Izvestia that ruby, traditionally considered one of the most sought-after gems in the jewelry market, is steadily strengthening its position as one of the most reliable investment assets. This gemstone has a number of unique advantages for long-term investment. Unlike volatile financial instruments, the value of natural rubies increases smoothly and without sudden jumps, demonstrating steady growth.
