The candidate of medical sciences named the symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy
Hepatic encephalopathy is a complication of severe liver diseases when, due to its poor functioning, toxins begin to affect the brain. The liver normally filters the blood, removing dangerous substances, but if it does not cope, the nervous system suffers, and a person begins to behave completely differently from usual. Kirill Masliev, Candidate of Medical Sciences, member of the State Council Commission on Active Long-term Life, Head of the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Rudn University, founder of the Heroes Charitable Foundation, told Izvestia on August 25.
"Frequent mood swings can be one of the first signals. But they are not the only ones: with encephalopathy, forgetfulness, absent-mindedness, sleep problems, trembling in hands, and slow speech appear. In severe cases, a person may even lose their orientation in space or fall into a coma," he warned.
The main cause is cirrhosis of the liver, but infections, bleeding, dehydration, excessive consumption of protein foods or certain medications can also trigger the development of encephalopathy. Sometimes this complication also occurs in acute liver failure, such as hepatitis or poisoning.
"Therefore, any oddity in behavior or thinking in a person with liver disease is an alarming signal. In such a situation, it is important to show the patient to a doctor as soon as possible in order to stop the development of a dangerous condition in time," Masliev advised.
Galina Chudinskaya, a neurologist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), told Izvestia on August 14 that diabetic encephalopathy is a slowly progressive brain damage that develops in patients with type I and type II diabetes against the background of chronically elevated blood sugar levels, glucose fluctuations and microcirculation disorders.
