Due to the onset of darkness, the search for the missing group of tourists in the area of the Baransky volcano on the island of Iturup in the Sakhalin region has been temporarily suspended. This was announced on August 24 by the head of the Kurilsky Municipal District (MO) of the region Konstantin Istomin.

"At the moment, the search activities are temporarily suspended due to the onset of night time," he wrote on the Telegram channel.

According to him, rescuers examined the area with a radius of 7 km and found no traces of animals that could pose a threat to tourists. The search is complicated by low clouds and thick fog.

Istomin added that if the weather conditions improve, a helicopter can be used to continue the search.

"Representatives of the Ministry of Defense, rescuers, OMVD officers and employees of the district administration are taking part in the search. On the morning of August 25, the search will resume, and it is planned to involve 25 people in the work," he concluded.

The loss of a tour group of 10 people was reported earlier that day. According to Istomin, the tour group did not get in touch in the area of the Baransky volcano. Later, investigators began checking on the disappearance of the group.

Later it became known that the tour group was not registered. It is assumed that they could have "taken a wrong turn" due to very heavy fog. At the same time, the guide accompanying the group was in this area for the first time.
