Investigators are conducting an investigation into the disappearance of a group of tourists in the area of the Baransky volcano on the island of Iturup in the Sakhalin region. This was announced on August 24 by the press service of the investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia for the region.
"A procedural check is being conducted on this fact on the grounds of a crime under Part 1 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Provision of services that do not meet security requirements")," the publication noted.
The press service stressed that at the moment the circumstances of the incident are being established.
The loss of a tour group of 10 people was reported earlier that day. According to Konstantin Istomin, the head of the Kurilsky Municipal District (MO) of the Sakhalin Region, the tourist group did not get in touch in the area of the Baransky volcano.
Later it became known that the tour group was not registered. It is assumed that they could have "taken a wrong turn" due to very heavy fog. At the same time, the guide accompanying the group was in this area for the first time.
