Russian athlete Maria Sharapova has been inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Tennis player Serena Williams announced this on August 23.

"Let's welcome Maria Sharapova to the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Congratulations," she said.

According to Williams, it is an honor for her to be a former rival, an ex-fan, and now a "friend forever" for the athlete.

Sharapova was chosen by the decision of the jury, and also took the first place in the fan vote.

In October 2024, it became known that Sharapova would be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The athlete is the owner of 36 titles, including five majors (tennis tournaments that are included in the Grand Slam tournament)

In addition, Evgeny Kafelnikov, Vice President of the Russian Tennis Federation, was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport on January 21, 2019. He became the second Russian to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The first is Marat Safin.
