South African President discusses Ukraine with EU leaders
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, French President Emmanuel Macron and Finnish President Alexander Stubb. This was reported in the press service of the Presidential Administration of the Republic of South Africa.
The main topic of discussion was efforts to achieve peace between Russia and Ukraine. These contacts were a continuation of the diplomatic meetings organized after the talks between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelensky. Ramaphosa is planning additional phone calls with other European leaders in the coming weeks.
"The European leaders highly appreciated the role of South Africa in cooperation with both sides of the conflict and reaffirmed their commitment to support peace initiatives," the presidential administration said.
Ramaphosa noted the need for bilateral and trilateral meetings between Russia, Ukraine and the United States to demonstrate the serious intentions of the parties to cease hostilities.
Earlier, on August 23, the head of the League faction in the Italian Senate, Massimiliano Romeo, called on Macron not to interfere with efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine by sending European troops to the war zones. He noted that there is no point in talking about the army and the nuclear umbrella.
