On August 23, the head of the Georgian State Security Service, Henri Ohanashvili, announced his resignation after consultations with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.
"I want to inform the public that I, in coordination with the ruling party, have decided to resign the head of the State Security Service of Georgia and the position of adviser to the Prime Minister of Georgia on national security issues," reads a statement posted on the State Security Service's Facebook page (owned by Meta, a company recognized in the Russian Federation as extremist and whose activities are prohibited on the territory of the Russian Federation).
According to Kobakhidze, in the context of global challenges, global and regional security is facing new challenges that affect Georgia's security. In this regard, the analytical processing of information is of "paramount importance". Kobakhidze believes that his experience and knowledge will help in the successful implementation of analytical activities on national security issues.
Earlier, on August 1, it was reported that the ruling Georgian Dream party for the third time nominated the current head of the capital, Kakha Kaladze, as a candidate for mayor of Tbilisi. It is specified that he has held this position since November 13, 2017.
