The geopolitical weight of the European Union (EU) was an illusion based on economic dimensions. This was announced on August 22 by the former head of the European Central Bank (ECB) and former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi.

"For many years, the EU has believed that the economic dimension of 450 million consumers carries weight in geopolitics and international trade relations. And this year will be remembered as the year when this illusion finally dissolved," the Corriere della Sera newspaper quoted him as saying.

He noted that earlier the European community "was forced to give up" under the influence of the US President Donald Trump's trade duties on imports. The United States has also forced the EU to increase military spending in a way that is not in the interests of the participating countries.
