WP reported on Hegseth's dismissal of the head of the Pentagon intelligence agency
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has fired the director of the Pentagon's intelligence agency, Lieutenant General Jeffrey Cruz. This was reported on August 22 by The Washington Post (WP), citing sources.
"Hegseth fired Lieutenant General Jeffrey Cruz, director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, the last high-ranking army or intelligence officer to lose his post as a result of a broader purge of senior national security officials," the publication says.
The newspaper notes that the sources, commenting on the reason for the dismissal, mentioned only a "loss of confidence" in Cruz. It is noted that Hegseth used this definition to justify the dismissal of other senior officers this year.
According to WP, since taking office, Hegseth has fired a number of the country's most senior military officers.
The Economist magazine reported on August 21 that US President Donald Trump fired one of the senior analysts of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) on Russia. It was clarified that in 2016, a CIA employee who had worked in intelligence for more than 20 years led the preparation of a report on Russia's alleged interference in the US presidential election.
