- The lawyer of the basketball player Kasatkin, who was detained in Paris, announced the date of the court session.
The hearing on the case of basketball player Daniil Kasatkin, who was detained in Paris, will be held on August 27. On August 22, the athlete's lawyer, Frederic Belo, told Izvestia about this.
"On Wednesday, August 27, at 14:00 in Paris (15:00 Moscow time. — Ed.) a hearing will be held in the investigative chamber. We are talking about a hearing on the petition for the release of Mr. Kasatkin," he said.
The lawyer clarified that the hearing had previously been scheduled for August 20, but it was later postponed. According to Belo, there is currently no information about the course of the extradition procedure for the basketball player.
Belo noted that the exchange of information between the US Department of Justice and the relevant French department can sometimes take several days, so Kasatkin's representatives continue to wait for new information on the progress of the case.
The athlete's defender added that the French side ignored the requests of the basketball player and his lawyers regarding the conditions of the athlete's detention, but thanks to persistent requests to the guards and the prison governor, conditions were improved.
Kasatkin's detention in France became known on July 9 at the request of the United States. Belo told Izvestia that Kasatkin is probably accused of extortion due to the use of his computer by intruders. In turn, the Prosecutor General's Office of the Paris Court of Appeal informed Izvestia on July 11 that the United States has 60 days to provide materials on the basketball player's extradition request.
On July 10, the Russian Embassy in France requested consular access to the athlete, but it was not granted due to the position of the authorities, but permission was received on July 16. The basketball player himself said in court that he did not know what he was accused of and refused extradition. According to the athlete's lawyer, Kasatkin has not yet gained access to the gym, so he studies in his cell — it is forbidden to enter the sports field. He managed to get books in Russian, pens and notebooks.
