Lidiya Sadulayeva, an ophthalmologist at the 3Z clinic, told Izvestia on August 26 why her eyes can water.

According to her, this can often be caused by a foreign body getting into the eye, such as eyelashes or grains of sand. Such objects can damage the conjunctiva or cornea, and infection can enter the eye tissue through a scratch. At the same time, it is important to avoid irritation that may occur during friction, especially if your hands are not clean.

Another common cause of lacrimation is conjunctivitis, Sadulayeva added. It can be either allergic or cold in nature. Allergic conjunctivitis occurs due to an allergic reaction to various substances that cause inflammation of the mucous membrane of the eyes. As a result, histamine is released, which causes redness, swelling, and itching. Cold conjunctivitis often manifests itself during the period of temperature fluctuations and is accompanied by severe lacrimation and pain in the eyes. These symptoms indicate an allergic reaction to frost.

"Lacrimation can also be caused by certain ophthalmic inflammatory diseases. So, with blepharitis, a chronic inflammation of the edges of the eyelids, often caused by a bacterial infection, malfunction of the meibomian glands, seborrhea or demodicosis, irritation of the edge of the eyelid provokes reflex lacrimation," said the ophthalmologist.

Keratitis, an inflammation of the cornea, can also lead to lacrimation, especially if the disease is caused by infection or injury, or by improper care of contact lenses.

In addition, according to the specialist, some disorders in the tear ducts also lead to lacrimation. Newborns are often diagnosed with dacryostenosis, a narrowing or blockage of the lacrimal—nasal canal, which disrupts the normal outflow of tears, causing it to stagnate. In the future, this can lead to the development of more serious diseases, such as dacryocystitis, an inflammation of the lacrimal sac with an infectious process.

If lacrimation occurs for no apparent reason, accompanied by pain, redness of the eyes or blurred vision, Sadulaeva advised to immediately consult a doctor for diagnosis and treatment to avoid serious complications.

At the end of July, ophthalmologist Anna Solovey told how to protect your eyes from excessive stress in the summer. According to her, you can use moisturizing drops, but their use should be carried out strictly on the recommendation of a doctor.
