The biologist warned against using body cream in the facial area
The skin of the face, especially around the eyes, is characterized by a smaller thickness, which makes it more susceptible to both active ingredients and irritants (for example, perfumes). Yulia Drobysheva, chief technology developer of the Krassa brand, molecular biologist, cosmetologist, told Izvestia on August 24 whether it is possible to use body cream on the face and how it will affect the skin.
"On the face, the concentration of sebaceous glands is five times higher, and body creams, usually more dense in texture, can lead to clogged pores, comedones and acne, especially in the presence of predisposing factors (oily skin, sensitivity)," the biologist noted.
In addition, according to the expert, the problem may lie in the ingredients of body creams. Some body creams and lotions contain comedogenic oils such as coconut and palm oil. They can cause clogged pores in acne-prone skin. Mineral oil is also not suitable for oily skin, as it creates an occlusive (closing) effect. Lotions often contain large amounts of fragrances, which are rarely hypoallergenic. These perfumes can include up to 3,000 different substances, including phthalates, which are carcinogens. On sensitive skin of the face, such components can provoke irritation, which manifests itself in the form of redness, itching or peeling.
Drobysheva also recalled that the skin of the face is constantly exposed to harmful environmental influences — ultraviolet radiation, pollution. In addition, stress affects the skin of the face. To resist this and preserve youth and radiance, she needs special ingredients such as antioxidants (vitamins C and E), sunscreen filters and active ingredients. In body creams, these substances are either absent or contained in scanty amounts and are not adapted for delicate facial skin.
Summing up, the expert noted that a one-time use of body cream is unlikely to lead to problems. This can be a way out in an emergency when a face cream is not at hand, but you should not turn a body cream into a habitual facial care.
Earlier, on April 16, Natalia Mikhailova, a cosmetologist and creator of the MESALTERA by Dr. Mikhaylova brand of professional cosmeceuticals, told Izvestia that mild cleansers should be used in the warm season — foams, gels or mousses with the addition of acids or enzymes.
