- The Russian Ambassador to Canada called Ottawa's calls for sanctions against Russia a political show
Russian Ambassador to Canada Oleg Stepanov said on August 22 that the Canadian authorities' calls for sanctions against Russia were nothing more than a "political show" aimed at distracting attention from the country's internal problems.
"In fact, the Canadian authorities are well aware that their so-called "sanctions" have no tangible impact on the Russian economy. Their effect is mostly ostentatious — just a piece of paper designed to demonstrate solidarity within a narrow club of like-minded Russophobes," Stepanov told RIA Novosti.
He added that the Canadian government is using the situation in Ukraine as a cover for its inability to solve real internal problems.
In June, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the allocation of a loan of $1.7 billion to Ukraine from the frozen assets of the Russian Federation. At the same time, he said that Ottawa would provide the Ukrainian side with a new package of military assistance worth $ 1.5 billion. Later, Kiev confirmed the receipt of a tranche of $1.7 billion from Canada.
