The trial of Sergey Kuznetsov, a citizen of Ukraine, who was detained in connection with the bombing of the Nord Stream gas pipelines, has begun in Italy. This was reported by the ANSA news agency on August 22.

"49-year-old Ukrainian Sergey Kuznetsov, accused of being one of the organizers of the explosion of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, got out of a police car in Rimini prison and arrived at the Bologna Court of Appeal for a hearing on the validity of his arrest," the publication says.

According to the newspaper, the hearing was temporarily postponed in order to find a translator from Ukrainian. It is specified that the meeting is being held in a closed format.

The day before, it became known about the detention of a Ukrainian in Italy in the case of the attack on Nord Streams. It was clarified that the operation was carried out on the warrant of the Federal Republic of Germany.

On the same day, the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera revealed the identity of the detainee. He turned out to be a former special forces soldier and agent of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) Sergey Kuznetsov. According to the newspaper, he is considered the commander of the yacht Andromeda, which was used on September 26, 2022 to transport terrorists who blew up a gas pipeline.

On November 30, 2024, the German Prosecutor General's Office identified two suspects in the sabotage of the Nord Stream and Nord Stream–2 gas pipelines. Prior to that, on October 4, the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, stated the need to investigate the terrorist attack against the joint venture with special care.

Leaks on gas pipelines were discovered in September 2022. Bjorn Lund, a representative of the Swedish seismic center, said that two powerful underwater explosions were registered in the area of pipeline leaks at the time of the emergency. After that, traces of explosives were found at the accident site. Russia is seeking an international investigation into the terrorist attacks.
