- Macron, Merz and Tusk intend to visit Moldova and support the country's course towards the EU
French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk intend to pay a visit to Moldova on August 27. This was reported on August 22 by the Reuters news agency, citing a statement from the Elysee Palace.
It is specified that the visit will take place at the invitation of President Maia Sandu. One of the goals of the European leaders' trip is to approve Moldova's path towards joining the European Union (EU).
"The leaders will confirm their full support for Moldova's security, sovereignty and European path," the agency noted.
The visit of the politicians will take place exactly one month before the parliamentary elections in Moldova, scheduled for September 28.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on August 21 that the Moldovan authorities are making desperate attempts to limit the activities of the opposition forces that are gaining popularity, while favorable conditions are being created in the European Union for the Moldovan diaspora to vote.
The head of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Moldova, Angelica Karaman, said on July 30 that the EU has the right to interfere in Moldova's elections, as the country seeks to join the alliance. According to her, even direct financing of political parties from the European Union is not considered corruption.
