An earthquake of magnitude 7.5 occurred in the Drake Strait area. This was reported on August 22 on the website of the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
"Magnitude: 7.5; depth: 10.8 km," the publication reported.
There is a tsunami threat for American Samoa and Hawaii.
Earlier, on August 20, a magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck Indonesia 23 km southeast of the city of Cikarang. According to the VolcanoDiscovery portal, the shallow depth of the earthquake caused it to be felt stronger near the epicenter than a deeper earthquake of similar magnitude.
