- The US State Department intends to check more than 55 million foreigners who have received visas.
Employees of the US Department of State check more than 55 million foreign citizens with valid American visas. This was reported on August 21 by the Associated Press (AP) agency, citing a written response from the agency to journalists.
"As part of our review, we are reviewing all available information, including records from law enforcement or immigration services, as well as any other information that comes to light after a visa is issued and indicates a potential lack of visa eligibility," the State Department said.
It is noted that in case of discovery of such information, the visa will be cancelled. In this case, its owner, who is located in the United States, may be deported.
The experts conducting the inspection are interested in such signs of violations as visa overstaying, the participation of the person who received it in criminal or terrorist activities, or support for extremist organizations.
Earlier, on August 19, the US State Department cancelled more than 6 thousand international student visas, of which 4 thousand were terminated from citizens of foreign countries that violated the laws of the United States. Earlier, the administration of US President Donald Trump suspended the appointment for an interview for international students. But in June, when the measures were lifted, it was announced that applicants would be asked to make their social media accounts publicly available for enhanced verification.
