The Russian Federation withdrew from the UN process on the incident with the detention of Ukrainian warships in the Black Sea in 2018. This was announced on August 21 by the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the website.

"On August 21, the Russian Federation withdrew from the arbitration process under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea on the detention of three Ukrainian warships in the Black Sea in November 2018," the publication says.

It is clarified that the reason was violations during the proceedings and the illegitimate composition of the arbitration tribunal. The press service of the department emphasizes that the decision of the "arbitrators" will not be recognized by Russia.

On November 25, 2018, the ships of the Ukrainian Navy Berdyansk, Yany Kapu and Nikopol, in violation of the UN Convention, invaded the native Russian territorial waters in the Black Sea, and then began moving towards the Kerch Strait. At the same time, the vessels maneuvered dangerously and did not respond to the demands of the FSB border service to stop.

The Russian side had to use force. Then the ships and crews were first taken to Kerch, where the wounded Ukrainian citizens were hospitalized. The remaining crew members were transported to Simferopol for the selection of a preventive measure.
