- Bloomberg has learned about the US Department of Justice's call to dismiss Fed Governor Lisa Cook
The US Department of Justice has called for the resignation of Lisa Cook, a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. This was reported by Bloomberg on August 21.
It is clarified that an official of the Department of Justice, Ed Martin, sent a letter to Fed Chairman Jerome Powell.
"I am currently calling on you to expel Ms. Cook from your board of directors. Do it today, before it's too late!" the letter says.
According to Martin, no American considers it appropriate to continue Cook's work when a cloud is hanging over her. The official added that the issue "requires further study."
Cook, in turn, stated that she intends to remain at the Fed after US President Donald Trump's demand for her resignation. She also noted that she plans to respond to any legitimate claims against her and provide the facts.
According to the agency, Cook's resignation will give Trump another vacancy on the Fed's board of directors, so the American leader is increasing pressure on the American central bank, demanding a reduction in the base rate. It is noted that only the president himself can dismiss the Fed governor and only if there are grounds for this.
The Financial Times (FT) newspaper reported on July 25 that any attempt to limit the Fed's independence would "have a very bad effect on the markets." It clarifies that markets value the independence of central banks, especially in setting interest rates.
On July 2, Trump called on the Fed chairman to resign immediately. At the same time, on July 16, CBS News reported that the American leader had consulted with Republicans in Congress on the dismissal of the head of the department. According to the channel, he repeatedly raised the issue of Powell's replacement, as he kept the interest rate at the same level instead of lowering it. On July 18, the US president said that Powell's appointment was one of his worst mistakes.
