In the vicinity of the Gribnoye massif in the Kirovsky district of the Leningrad region, old ammunition from the Great Patriotic War (WWII) is often found. The mother of a child who lit a bonfire with a boy who suffered life-threatening injuries told Izvestia on August 21 that locals had long since stopped paying attention to such finds.

"I've been living here all my life, we don't even pay attention to it, we're used to it. As sad as it may sound. <...> We were teenagers too, walking. And in that forest, as I understand it, there are some kind of excavations," she explained.

The woman clarified that the children had repeatedly played in the forest where the tragedy occurred.

"We went for a bike ride, and we ended up there. We decided to make a bonfire. And, as the son said, there was already something else in this fire, some branches. They put their twigs on top of it and set it on fire. And then this explosion came about half an hour later," she shared.

The incident occurred in the forest near the Druzhba SNT, where three children decided to light a bonfire. Later, parts of the shafts from mortar mines were found in its place, which, tentatively, may relate to the period of the Second World War.

After a while, a loud bang was heard from the campfire, as a result of which an 11-year-old student was seriously injured. The boy could not be saved, he died in the ambulance. A criminal case has been opened into the incident.
