The psychologist explained the phenomenon of black humor
Jokes about tragic or taboo topics help people distance themselves from emotional pain and fears that are difficult to deal with directly. Natalia Danilova, a psychologist and psychology teacher, told Izvestia about the hidden mechanisms of black humor and its impact on a person's mental state on August 22.
She identified three key reasons for the appeal of black humor: emotional release through the activation of endorphins, symbolic control over unpredictable situations, and strengthening social bonds through shared experience of difficult topics. This humor is especially often used by emotionally sensitive people who are inclined to intellectual analysis and who have experience of encountering traumatic situations.
The specialist warned that black humor can turn into a defense mechanism that masks suppressed emotions. The signs of problems are constant jokes regardless of the context, the predominance of sarcasm and cynicism, as well as negative emotions hidden behind laughter.
"If a person constantly jokes about death, misfortune or illness without experiencing real anxiety, this may indicate hidden fatigue or emotional burnout. Black humor can hide impotence, anxiety, irritation, or a sense of injustice," explains Danilova.
For the safe use of black humor, the psychologist recommends mindfulness, taking into account the context and audience, complementing jokes with other ways of working with emotions, and practicing reflection. With a proper approach, black humor can reduce stress, help to live taboo emotions, strengthen social bonds and develop cognitive skills.
"A joke is a tool, not a solution to a problem. When we understand why we laugh, humor ceases to be a mask and becomes a way to meaningfully experience complex emotions," the specialist emphasized.
Clinical psychologist Daria Yausheva told Izvestia on July 16 about the syndrome of work overload. According to her, long and frequent business meetings can overload the cognitive system and provoke emotional burnout, it is not in the classifiers of diseases, and the doctor will not diagnose it, but it is quite real and can affect the general condition of a person.
