U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will discuss security guarantees for Ukraine with representatives of the European Union (EU) on Thursday, August 21. This was reported on August 20 by The New York Times (NYT), citing sources.

Rubio will hold "delicate diplomatic talks" with colleagues from Ukraine and other European allies.

It is noted that during the discussion, it will be determined in advance what security guarantees can be for Ukraine before a possible meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky.

A future agreement may include U.S. intelligence and surveillance assistance. The deployment of forces in the Black Sea is also possible.

Earlier in the day, US Vice President Jay Dee Vance said that the country would not commit to guaranteeing Ukraine's security without understanding the conditions for ending the conflict. At the same time, he noted that European countries should assume the lion's share of Ukraine's security guarantees.

Bloomberg also learned about the readiness of about 10 countries to send troops to Ukraine as part of providing possible security guarantees for Kiev.
