- The Hungarian Foreign Ministry pointed out the need to distinguish between sports and politics
Sport should not become a hostage of politics. This was announced on August 20 by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.
"Sports and geopolitics have nothing to do with each other," he noted on his Facebook page (banned in Russia, owned by Meta Corporation, recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation).
According to the minister, Budapest highly appreciates the position that "no one should be barred from the Olympic Games because of their passport or nationality." Szijjarto stressed that Hungary openly speaks about the complete independence of sport from geopolitics and calls on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to "show more courage in the future."
Mikhail Degtyarev, Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation and President of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), said on July 15 that Russia's relations with international sports federations were warming to varying degrees, and negotiations were continuing with them. According to him, the first priority is the return of Russian athletes to the global sports scene.
