The IKI RAS denied the rumor about the rise of the "black moon"
Scientists from the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Institute of Space Research (IKI) The Russian Academy of Sciences on August 20 denied information about the rising of the "black moon", which was expected this month.
The researchers noted that the term "black Moon" does not exist in astronomy, it was borrowed from English-speaking practice. It is clarified that the concept implies two new moons in one month.
According to scientists, the phases of the Moon are separated by a time interval of about 30 days, and therefore a full moon is possible twice only if one event occurs on the 1st or 2nd of the month, and the second on the 30th or 31st.
"The next new moon will occur on August 23rd. From this alone, it can be understood that the second new moon in August will not fit in any way. And, indeed, the previous one was on July 24, and the next one will be on September 21," the researchers noted in their Telegram channel.
In addition, a black Moon can be called a phenomenon when there are four new moons in one season. However, in the summer of 2025, two such phenomena have already been recorded (June 25, July 24), and the third is expected on August 23, so the fourth will no longer fit into the summer season.
Earlier, on August 19, the Sun experienced an outbreak of the penultimate power level, Class M, which lasted 50 minutes. At that time, it was reported that moderate solar activity was expected in the next few days.
