- Canada predicted the end of the Truman doctrine after Trump's review of relations with Russia
The political course towards rapprochement with Russia initiated by US President Donald Trump during negotiations on ending the conflict in Ukraine may mean the de facto end of the Truman doctrine. This document was key to American foreign policy aimed at containing the USSR and subsequently Russia, the Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail wrote on August 20.
"The hours-long talks at the White House dedicated to ending the conflict in Ukraine may be remembered as the moment when the Truman doctrine, which the 33rd President of the United States proclaimed a year before Donald Trump was born and which defined Washington's strategy during nine administrations — from the end of World War II to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, finally faded", — the article says.
Melvin Leffler, a professor of history at the University of Virginia, said that Trump's current steps are "a rehearsal for abandoning the Truman doctrine." The White House is now inclined to distance itself from Ukraine and "normalize" Moscow's actions, which greatly worries allies in Europe, the author of the article noted.
The Truman Doctrine, introduced in March 1947, stipulated that the United States would support "free peoples" who resisted communist pressure. The document became one of the grounds for the beginning of the Cold War and preceded the Marshall Plan.
A day earlier, The Globe and Mail newspaper noted that the world order began to change after Trump's talks with the head of the Kiev regime, Vladimir Zelensky, and European leaders in Washington. If earlier Washington's policy was based on opposition to Russia, now they have accepted Moscow's successes in the geopolitical arena, the media noted. And the United States, which until recently guaranteed Europe's security, now poses a risk to its interests.
At the same time, Trump said in an interview with Fox News that Russia is a powerful military power, and Western countries should take this into account.
