- Georgia demanded that the EU stop calling on the country to escalate with the Russian Federation
The European Union (EU) countries should stop demanding that the Georgian authorities escalate their relations with Russia. This was announced on August 20 by the chairman of the country's parliament, Shalva Papuashvili.
"Knowing the coordinates of a safe harbor means nothing if the ship and passengers get into a storm on the way to it," Sputnik Georgia quoted him as saying.
The politician pointed out that the EU should not demand that the Transcaucasian republic aggravate relations with Russia.
Papuashvili also noted that the European Union should not sponsor extremism if it wants to be a peace project. The politician noted that the movement towards Georgia's accession to the EU, which was initiated by the current authorities, should not lead to physical or spiritual value losses. Otherwise, by joining the EU, Georgia will have nothing left to defend, he concluded.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin told Izvestia on August 8 that Russia is ready to develop pragmatic cooperation with Georgia in areas where it is beneficial to both sides. The point is for Tbilisi to decide on its future actions, the diplomat noted. Tbilisi has repeatedly stated that it supports a pragmatic approach to relations with Moscow. However, Georgia does not consider it possible to restore diplomatic relations, as Russia has recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
Earlier, on February 19, Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili said she was glad that her country had not followed Ukraine's example and was not "on the same train" with her. According to her, earlier the idea was imposed on the Georgian society that if you do not get on this "train", the country will allegedly miss its chance.
