In Ukraine, about 7,000 people have been imprisoned for political reasons. This is reported in the declaration of the International "National Unity Club" on the release of political prisoners, published on August 20.

"Today, about 7 thousand people are political prisoners in Ukraine (the lists of persons are classified by the SBU)," the document says, which is provided on the organization's Telegram channel.

According to the National Unity Club, repression continues in the country against, among others, clergymen of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), rabbis, journalists, bloggers and citizens who express their opinions that do not coincide with the official position of the authorities.

The organization also published a list of 370 people convicted for political reasons and appealed to the Presidents of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and the United States Donald Trump with a request to include the issue of the release of political prisoners in the agenda of the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.

Earlier, on August 12, in Odessa, the SBU detained two rectors of churches of the canonical UOC on charges of supporting Russia. According to the Ukrainian secret service, the clergy allegedly engaged in "Russian propaganda" and supported the conduct of a special operation in Ukraine.

The demand for an amnesty for political prisoners as part of a peaceful settlement was contained in a memorandum from Russia submitted to the Ukrainian side at the talks in Istanbul on June 2. Also, according to the document, ensuring the rights and freedoms of the Russian-speaking population and ending the oppression of the UOC should become part of the peace process.
