- The sun has thrown out one of the largest prominences in recent years
One of the largest prominences in recent years has been ejected from the Sun. This was reported on August 20 in the press service of the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the Institute of Space Research (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
"This morning, the release into space of one of the largest prominences in recent years was recorded. The structure of some absolutely incredible size, which at some point exceeded the size of the Sun (about 1.5 million km), began to show the first signs of destabilization around 7 a.m. Moscow time, and by 10 a.m. it had completely detached itself from the star," the Telegram channel said.
It is noted that the probability that the prominence will head towards Earth is quite small, however, these space weather phenomena are the most dangerous because of their size and mass.
On August 12, the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the IKI RAS reported that after a two-week break, emissions of giant prominences resumed on the Sun. It was noted that when directly hitting the Ground, it is the prominences that cause the strongest geomagnetic storms.
