Five Canadian Armed Forces soldiers were suspended for Nazi salute
The Canadian Armed Forces are investigating after the release of a video showing five soldiers of the 22nd Royal Infantry Regiment demonstrating a Nazi salute. This was reported on August 19 by the CBC television channel.
"The Canadian Army is currently dealing with another incident of alleged hate speech in which soldiers from Quebec were filmed allegedly during a party, while some of them were giving Nazi greetings," the material says.
All five servicemen have been suspended from service during the investigation. The recording was made in 2023, but the command of the Canadian Armed Forces found out about it only in early August. As a result of the inspection, military personnel may be disciplined or dismissed from the army.
"Incitement to hatred and extremism has no place in the Canadian army. This harms our ability to hire the best from Canada, maintain trust in us to carry out operations, and it undermines public trust in our institution," said Lieutenant General Michael Wright, Commander of the Canadian Ground Forces.
Russian Ambassador to Ottawa Oleg Stepanov told Izvestia on July 23 that Canada had long been under the influence of radical Ukrainian nationalists and descendants of the Nazis. He noted that the bearers of the Bandera ideology, who are still proud of the service of their ancestors in the ranks of the Nazi SS, have become entwined like an octopus in business, the upper and middle echelons of power in modern Canada.
On February 19, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia was concerned about the growing spread of neo-Nazism and discrimination, especially in Ukraine, the European Union (EU) and Canada, where "a multimillion-strong diaspora of Nazi collaborators has settled." He pointed out that Moscow will constantly pay attention to the joint work of different countries in the fight against neo-Nazism, Russophobia and other forms of racial and religious hatred.
