The EU warned of difficulties in sending French and British troops to Ukraine
Paris and London will experience difficulties in the event of a potential deployment of troops to Ukraine due to the weakness of the political leadership - British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron. The Politico newspaper writes about this on August 19, citing a statement by officials of the European Union (EU).
"Given the political weakness of Macron and Starmer, it is difficult to imagine how this plan will be implemented," the newspaper quoted one of the European diplomats as saying.
It is noted that Paris and London are also facing political and economic difficulties, which further increases skepticism about their possible deployment of troops to Ukraine.
In turn, the German authorities are currently hesitating and have not made a final decision on this issue.
"This decision must be made by parliament," said Andreas Schwartz, a member of the Bundestag from the Social Democratic Party of Germany, in an interview with the newspaper.
Earlier that day, Bloomberg learned about the readiness of about 10 countries to send troops to Ukraine. It is noted that the prerequisite for such plans was the meeting of EU leaders with US President Donald Trump at the White House, which confirmed the commitment of the United States to security guarantees. At the same time, the nature of possible American support for such initiatives remains unclear.
On August 18, the head of the Polish President's office, Zbigniew Bogutsky, criticized the plan to send troops. According to him, the idea of sending a peacekeeping contingent of European countries to the territory of Ukraine after the end of the conflict, proposed by representatives of the coalition of the willing, is a bad solution for a peaceful settlement.
