In modern conditions, the human intestine often needs probiotics and prebiotics. About where they can be obtained from to maintain health or to make up for their deficiency, August 20, Gazeta.Ru" was told by Olga Shestakova, a nutritionist, and Ellada Mordvintseva, a doctor, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vitafarma Company JSC.

According to doctors, people often consume foods with "live bacteria" in their food, which help maintain the level of enzymes in the body. These are kefir, yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut.

At the same time, experts emphasize that fermented foods are not a substitute for specialized medicines.

"In fermented foods, probiotic cultures are present in very small amounts. This is especially true for fermented milk products — they contain fermented milk bacillus, and some manufacturers enrich their product with bifidobacteria. At the same time, to get as many bifidobacteria as is contained in one tablet of any certified probiotic based on bifidobacterium bifidum, you would have to drink 200 liters of kefir with bifidobacteria," Mordvintseva shared.

At the same time, drugs containing probiotics are recommended to be used only to compensate for their deficiency in the body.

"Medications are necessary after a course of antibiotics, for severe symptoms of dysbiosis or irritable bowel syndrome, for chronic gastrointestinal diseases, after infections or poisoning, in preparation for diagnosis or treatment," said Shestakova.

Earlier, on August 18, scientists talked about the effect of intestinal microbes on insomnia. It clarifies that sleep disorders may be related to the composition of intestinal microbes, and the opposite is also true: sleep habits can affect intestinal health. These findings expand understanding of the causes of insomnia and open up possibilities for microbiome-based treatment approaches. According to scientists, future treatments for insomnia may include probiotics (such as yogurt or sauerkraut), prebiotics (sources of fiber), or even fecal transplants.
